Webcams in Japan: what you’ll see

Shibuya Crossing Tokyo, Japan

The world’s busiest pedestrian scramble, live from above. Up to 3,000 people cross at once when the lights turn red for every car. This camera looks down over the scramble in front of Shibuya Station, with the giant screens and neon of Tokyo’s youth district all around.

Best time to watch: Evenings from 18:00 local time, when the crowds peak and the screens light up.

Mount Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko, Japan

Japan’s sacred volcano across Lake Kawaguchiko. Mount Fuji, 3,776 metres high, seen from Oishi Park on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchiko. The peak is often hidden by cloud, so a clear view is a lucky moment.

Best time to watch: Early morning in winter, when the air is clearest and the peak is snow-capped.

Hanamikoji Street Kyoto, Japan

The main street of Gion, Kyoto’s geisha district. Hanamikoji is the heart of Gion, lined with wooden teahouses where geiko and maiko still entertain. The official stream from the Kyoto tourism association.

Best time to watch: Early evening, when the lanterns come on.

Kiyomizu-zaka Kyoto, Japan

The old slope up to Kiyomizu-dera temple. Kiyomizu-zaka is the steep, shop-lined lane leading up to Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto’s most famous temples. Handy for checking how crowded it is before you go.

Best time to watch: Early morning, before the crowds arrive.
